What Is Directional Drilling?
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is a trenchless method of installing underground pipe, conduit, or cable along a prescribed bore path. A pilot hole is drilled along the planned route, then enlarged through reaming passes, and the product pipe is pulled back through the bore. HDD is used when open-cut trenching would disrupt roads, waterways, environmentally sensitive areas, or existing infrastructure.

HDD projects include drilling in all types of rock and alluvial soils — placement of oil and gas pipe installations with sizes up to 48" or as small as 2" — power and communication conduits or duct.
